Some Things I Have Learned

by Jihan on April 29, 2013

Lavender bottle 183x300 Some Things I Have Learned

Essential oils have been a big part of enhancing my family’s quality of life and we have been passionate about incorporating them daily into our healthy lifestyle. I was first introduced to essential oils when I was having a very rough pregnancy. Being sick all day and night made it difficult for me to function in everyday life. After trying many remedies, someone held a bottle of essential oils up and suggested that that could be helpful. Believing that essential oils were only used to make a room ‘smell nice,’ I rejected it thinking that the woman was crazy for even suggesting them!

How could a little bottle of ‘perfume’ possibly be helpful for my morning sickness??

However, after my first child was born, someone again brought essential oils up to me as a way to keep my new family well. This time it was from a pediatric chiropractor that I trusted.

What was it about these essential oils?!? That’s when I was prompted to find out more and here’s some of what I learned:

~ Essential oils are natural, super-concentrated aromatic liquids found in shrubs, trees, flowers, seeds, bushes and roots. They help to defend plants against insects, diseases, and environmental conditions. They are considered the life force of the plant and work synergistically with the human body. (1 drop of peppermint essential oils = about 28 cups of peppermint tea!)

~ Essential oils are NOT fatty oils like olive, coconut, or almond oils. They are also different than essential fatty acids (like omega 3,6,9).

~ Real essential oils do not expire. If you see an essential oil with an expiration date, it’s probably been adulterated in some way (isn’t pure). The exception are citrus oils because they are expressed oils and not distilled.

~ They come from all over the world, depending on where the plant is from. Tea tree mostly comes from Australia where France in known for its Lavender. Other oils, such at Frankincense and Myrrh, come from the Middle East and yet others like Dorado Azul and Copaiba come from the Amazon Rain Forest. Wherever the plant is from is where the essential oil comes from.

~ Not all essential oils are created equal. It takes very specialized planting (seeds AND soil conditions), harvesting, distillation, and testing methods to get a medicinal-grade, genuine essential oil. While many companies claim that they are selling pure, therapeutic or even organic oils, in reality they could be selling highly-adulterated oils because there is no regulation on labeling yet. There is a certification process in the works and that should help people better decipher what grade of essential oil they are really using. Until then, we only recommend using Young Living Essential Oils brand. They are the world leaders in essential oils and, by far, the most researched for results and tested for quality.

~ Essential oils are safe for babies, children, adults, & pets. While some essential oils would be used with caution with babies and pets, most of them are perfectly fine to use from the moment of birth!

~ They have been recorded in history for thousands of years! References have been found in Egyptian hieroglyphics, Native American teaching, and even throughout the Bible.

~ There are 3 ways to use essential oils: Inhalation, Topical Application, & Ingestion.

~ Just smelling essential oils triggers a positive chemical response in the brain that can make you feel better.

~ Real essential oils can help support your everyday life. We use the oils every day to boost our immune systems, sleep better, reduce stress, and help heal cuts, burns, bug bites, headaches, stomachaches, etc. Whatever is going on, the first thing we reach for is a Young Living essential oil!

~ Over 50 hospitals in the United States already use essential oils. As more and more research proves the safety and benefits of essential oils, many mainstream institutions are jumping on board to seek out better health solutions to some of the more traditional and often ineffective routes to wellness.

~ They just WORK! After so many years of using them, there’s no denying how effective they are. My kids are 13yo (almost), 5yo, and 2.5yo and until this day they have still never used antibiotics or even acetaphinomen. Young Living’s essential oils have worked for us 100% of the time. Now those are RESULTS.

Happy oiling!
